“Don’t be charmed too much by the beauty of its light. You may circle around it, make it your moon but never draw yourself into it. Glide carefully, dance warily. If you don’t, you’ll just be a wick to its flame, its fire that leads to an untimely demise.

We told you so… but you didn’t listen.”

My vision of fairies as insects is depicted in this work where a fairy is shown as a pitiful moth which got caught in a candle’s flame. Like the usual tragic death of a moth, the fairy’s wings are caught by the fire, consumed, leaving her enormous pain that makes her succumb to death. As the fairy dies, she finally gives off her light, her magic, her life. Her two close fairy friends grieves beside her as she begins to dissipate, vanishing into light particles, waiting for her eternal repose.

I have always looked at fairies as insects, winged creatures which bear light emanating from their skin. Despite the fact that they possess their own light, as insects, they exhibit phototaxis. They seemed to be charmed naturally by light, circling around them, be it a porch light, a headlight or a naked light from a candle. In ecology, most insects can travel by maintaining a natural source of celestial light, the moon in particular. However, when they are around a stronger light, they become confused. They continue to fly around it because they instinctively want to keep the light on a certain side of their body while navigating. Thus they circle around the source, and too often, they circle too close, very close that when that light is fire itself, they are consumed, burnt, killed.

This work portrays the fondness of a fairy to light, a naked light in this case, fondness for something that they can not live, something beautiful yet fatal. Love for death, indeed.
